Gilman, CO

Gilman is an abandoned mining town in southeastern Eagle County, Colorado. Founded in 1886 during the Colorado Silver Boom, the town later became a center of lead and zinc mining in Colorado, centered around the now-flooded Eagle Mine. It was abandoned in 1984 by order of the Environmental Protection Agency because of toxic pollutants, including contamination of the ground water, as well as unprofitability of the mines. It is currently a ghost town on private property and is strictly off limits to the public.

Leadville-Two Mile High City

Leadville is the highest incorporated city and the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States. A former silver mining town that lies near the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the city includes the Leadville Historic District, which preserves many historic structures and sites from Leadville's dynamic mining era.

Turquoise Lake

Like sterling charms around a blue-green gemstone, the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area campgrounds are treasures for nature loving families. About two and a half hours west of Denver, in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains near Leadville, the campgrounds are named for nearby gold and silver mines and the mineral tycoons who owned them. They offer access to boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and beaches with million dollar vistas.
